Biography: James entered the U.S. Force in 1955 and graduated from flight school in 1956. His first assignment was to flying the KC-97 refueling tanker which is a modified Boeing 377. Later he flew the Air Force KC-135, also a refueling tanker which is a modified Boeing 707. After flying refueling tankers for ten years, he was assigned to the National Emergency Airborne Command Post 1963, where he flew the C-135 H and J models. He completed his flying career in the Air Force flying the E-4 which is a modified Boeing 747. James retired from the Air Force in 1983.
