Recipient’s Biographical Mr. Toma volunteered in Gary, Indiana at the age of 22 when he saw a trailer that came through town with “Win Your Wings” written on the side of it. When he received connfirmation he passed the test, he enlisted the very same day. He was sent to Miami, FL where he started his basic training with a group of cadets that included Bombardiers, Navigators, and Pilots. After basic training was over, he was sent to Knoxville, TN where he did 4 years of college in only 3 months! The first day started with 2+2 and by the end of the day he was doing Algebra, then in a week it was Advanced Algebra, then Trigonometry, Calculus, Logistics, Physics,et. Upon graduation he was sent to San Antonio, Texas for pre-flight school and after he graduated he started Bombardier school in San Angelo, Texas. While he was in San Angelo – the war ended in Germany and he was never needed overseas.
