Lee Almquist is age 88 and served in the US Navy during World War II. Lee was serving aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Franklin during the Okinawa invasion as the radio operator aboard a TBF torpedo bomber built by the Grumman Corporation. While he was in the air during a mission, the Franklin took a direct hit by a Kamikaze and was eventually sunk. When Lee’s flight returned, his ship was listing 20° and they were ordered to land aboard the USS Hornet.
Later, Lee was assigned to pilot training and he became what is known in the military as a “Mustang”. That is someone who starts as an enlisted personnel and finishes as an officer.
When asked what his most exciting moment during the war was Lee replied, “I was 17 years old! EVERYTHING was exciting!”
Lee was cheered on today by his “Significant Other” Joyce
