Manuel Machado, age 89 served in the U.S. Navy with the rank of Seamen 1st Class from 1943 to 1946. He served aboard the USS Enterprise on a 20 mm gun mount and also served on lookout duty.
Spike’s most memorable experience occurred on May 14, 1945 off the coast of Okinawa when the ship was attacked by numerous kamikazes. All of the attackers were shot down except for the last one which hit the ship at the number one elevator shaft, just 35 feet from where Spike was standing. The plane plunged 5 floors deep into the bowels of the aircraft carrier causing serious damage to the ship. Both spike in the USS Enterprise survived the attack!
