Gabe served in the Navy from 1941-1961. He worked in military security in Germany and Japan after WW2 and aboard 5 or more ships.
In 1942, a merchant ship he was on was torpedoed 100 miles SE of Cuba. He and shipmates were adrift for 2 days before being rescued by a Navy cruiser. After the torpedo attack, the sub surfaced and radioed the survivors their map position!
