Dick is a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was about .5 mile away on 12/7 and when I asked him what it was like he simply replied “it woke me up!!!”  He said they had 12 planes and they parked 9 of them and they were ordered to keep the 3 busy to appear as if they had more than they really did.
He was in the Navy as a radioman on PBYs 22P8 Flying Boats (with the sliding hatch-before they replaced them with the blister hatches).  They had just landed one time when they got shot at.  They had to abandon the plane in the mud flats.  He was able to get out of the plane and get behind a rock (about the 1/4 size of a car) to try to hide from the enemy firing range.

Thank you for your service Mr. Higgins.
