The Quest for the Spirit of San Antonio

Successful Flight

These Dream Flights are funded entirely by AADF’s national base of donors and volunteers.

The Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to honoring seniors and United States military veterans living in long-term care communities around the country. The Foundation’s only mission is to “Give Back To Those Who Have Given” by providing FREE Dream Flights using three fully restored Boeing Stearman biplanes.

From California to Florida to Massachusetts, AADF’s vintage aircraft land at local airports near long-term care facilities, where senior veterans take flight and come alive with memories.

On Memorial Day, 2015, we were honored to give our 1000th Dream Flight in Minneapolis. The story was featured on two national news segments which you can view at the following links: Dream flights: veterans treated to rides in vintage war planes and War veterans take to the sky.  In October of 2016, we will honor our 2,000th Dream Flight in Oxford, Mississippi, the same location our very first Dream Flight was given in 2011.

AADF has honored hundreds of senior veterans with a Dream Flight each year and will continue providing flights well into the future. To accomplish this, the Foundation hopes to acquire a fourth aircraft and have it based in Military City U.S.A. – San Antonio. The aircraft will appropriately be named, the “Spirit of San Antonio.” This additional plane will allow us to better serve the ever-growing senior veteran population in this region of the country, and will allow for more efficient coordination between the nationwide requests for Dream Flights and our ability to provide those flights in a timely manner. You can help make this happen.

Why San Antonio?

San Antonio has been a part of the U.S. military landscape for nearly 300 years. The city is known to have one of the largest active and retired military populations in the country. In fact, according to the 2013 Census, there are more than 106,000 veterans living in San Antonio and 1.5 million in Texas. In addition, U.S. News & World Report confirms that the older population is growing most rapidly in the West. And, the size of the long-term care living population continues to grow, making San Antonio an ideal home base for an additional AADF aircraft that will serve the proud state of Texas.

Private Group Leads Effort to Bring “Spirit of San Antonio” to Texas

Our goal is to raise $125,000 to purchase and initially operate a Boeing Stearman biplane – appropriately named “Spirit of San Antonio” – with the inaugural Dream Flight to occur at Stinson Airport.

Following the media coverage surrounding an AADF event at San Antonio’s Stinson Airport in April 2015, the Foundation was approached by a broad-based private group of citizens with the idea of purchasing and basing a Stearman aircraft in San Antonio. A Texas-based aircraft would enable AADF to quadruple the number of flights provided in Texas from 40 to more than 160.

This private group of citizens is led by former F-16 and current FedEx pilot Tim Newton, and includes local business leaders, grassroots contributors, and volunteers at AADF – all of whom have stepped forward to not only give their time to this worthy cause, but have contributed their own money toward making the Spirit of San Antonio a reality.

Once the aircraft is acquired, AADF plans to implement a media outreach campaign to promote the Spirit of San Antonio’s inaugural Dream Flight at a city-wide Veterans Day celebration at the historic Stinson Airport. In addition to the AADF story, we will share the story of the Spirit of San Antonio, which will highlight the City of San Antonio, its political and business leaders and the grass roots contributors who have helped make the Dream Flights a continued reality for our U.S. military senior veteran heroes.

Please join us in our efforts to bring the Spirit of San Antonio to Texas. For additional information please contact San Antonio resident Tim Newton, AADF Regional Director of Texas by phone at (210) 551-3404 or email tnewton@dreamflights.org.
